Alla fine del 1993 il ventunenne Brandon Teena si trasferisce da Lincoln a Falls City, Nebraska, depressa cittadina di provincia ben nota per la sua chiusura mentale e vari episodi di cronaca nera. Brandon è generoso, solare e affascinante, ma nasconde a tutti il segreto di essere un transgender. Ben presto la sua speranza di cominciare una nuova vita lì inizia a realizzarsi: diviene amico della timida Candace Lambert e dei suoi due futuri assassini John Lotter e Tom Nissen, seduce un sacco di ragazze finché non instaura una relazione con Lana Tisdale, una giovane introversa e in crisi con sé stessa, che trova in lui un amore e una devozione senza precedenti e lo ricambia con trasporto. La situazione precipita quando, a causa di una guida spericolata, la Polizia locale viene a sapere dei suoi piccoli precedenti in altre contee dello stato, del suo processo in corso cui sarà contumace, e soprattutto la sua vera identità: quella di Teena Brandon.
