Tratto da una commedia di Oscar Wilde, il film è ambientato a Londra nel 1890. Sir Robert Chiltern è un uomo politico di successo e un marito ideale per la seducente Lady Chiltern. Tutto procede per il meglio fino a quando compare la signora Cheveley che è a conoscenza di alcuni segreti riguardanti il passato del gentiluomo. Timoroso di perdere la sua reputazione e soprattutto l'amore della sua bella moglie, Sir Chilthern si rivolge a Lord Arthur Goring, donnaiolo amante della libertà e della vita mondana. Quest'ultimo si troverà al centro di una rete di bugie, inganni e convegni amorosi che metterà a repentaglio ciò a cui crede di più: il celibato. In fondo anche lui potrebbe diventare un marito ideale proprio come il suo amico. Bravissimi gli attori e perfetta la ricostruzione d' epoca.
