Il capitano William D. Stanaforth, brillante scienziato e astronauta di recente formazione, si imbarca in un epico viaggio di 270 giorni su Marte. Quando però si imbatte nel capitano Emily Maddox, astronauta concorrente che come William viaggia da sola verso il pianeta rossa, le cose non vanno come il previsto e i due sono costretti a prendere in considerazione l'ipotesi di interrompere le loro missioni e tornare indietro sulla Terra. Consumato dall'ambizione, William decide di sganciare la sua navicella e di continuare quella che sulla carta è una missione suicida. In viaggio verso l'ignoto, sarà così costretto a confrontarsi con la grandezza e la complessità dell'essere un eroe, con il dolore che ha causato e con i sacrifici che ha fatto.
