Fred Graham e Lilli Vanessi sono una coppia di attori che si trovano a recitare, lui nei panni di Petruccio e lei in quelli di Caterina, in un adattamento in musical di La bisbetica domata. I due avevano formato una coppia anche nella vita ma ora sono divorziati. Lili, che sta per sposarsi con un proprietario di ranch texano, mal sopporta però che Fred si sia invaghito di una giovane interprete proponendole il ruolo di Bianca. I conflitti previsti dal copione avranno il loro corrispettivo anche dietro le quinte. Ad essi si aggiunge la presenza di due gangster che esigono da Fred una somma persa al gioco da qualcuno che ha falsificato la sua firma.
