Sulla stessa isola, nell'hotel Jolly Roger, si ritrovano in vacanza svariati personaggi, tra cui spicca la nota attrice di Broadway Arlena Stuart, da poco sposata col capitano Marshall. La particolarità di questo soggiorno è che ogni persona è, in un certo modo, collegata ad Arlena, e cercherà di ottenere ciò che vuole da lei: Rex Brewster, un giornalista suo fan, vuole pubblicare la sua biografia; i coniugi Gardener, suoi ex-produttori, vogliono ri-scritturarla; Daphne Castle, titolare dell'hotel e sua ex-collega, vorrebbe che il marito si separasse da Arlena; Patrick Redfern, suo amante, la cui moglie, Christine, vorrebbe che fosse più fedele; Sir Horace Blatt, suo ex-amante, rivuole un diamante regalatole. Poirot, per l'ennesima volta, deve dire addio al suo sogno di godersi una vacanza rilassante, poiché un efferato delitto colpisce l'isola. Ma con il detective belga nessun criminale può fuggire.
