Il professor Honcy (Stewart) è uno dei massimi esponenti nel campo della ricerca sui materiali da costruzione aeronautici. Dopo essere rimasto vedovo, si è buttato ancora di più nel suo lavoro. Scopre così che la causa dei cedimenti strutturali della coda degli aerei è la fatica che deve sopportare il materiale: questa si manifesta dopo 1440 ore di volo. Inviato sul luogo di un incidente il professore scopre che l'aereo sul quale sta viaggiando è alla sua 1440esima ora di volo... A tratti divertente, soprattuto grazie al tono di seriosa leggerezza che Stewart riesce a imprimere al suo personaggio. Al suo fianco Marlene Dietrich.
