Per superare la traumatica separazione con il proprio fidanzato, la giovane Elizabeth (Norah Jones) parte per un lungo viaggio attraverso gli Stati Uniti, nonostante l'affettuosa amicizia di Jeremy (Jude Law). Per mantenersi Elizabeth si trova a lavorare in un piccolo caffè, dove conosce diverse persone, tutte più o meno tormentate, come Arnie (David Strathairn), poliziotto dal passato difficile e abbandonato dalla moglie (Rachel Weisz) o Leslie (Natalie Portman), una sfortunata giocatrice d'azzardo. In questo nuovo ambiente Elizabeth capisce il vero significato della solitudine e della disperazione.
