Z è una formica insoddisfatta, nevrotica, fantasiosa e ribelle, in cura dall'analista. La vita dentro il formicaio è dettata da regole ferree e ruota tutta intorno al lavoro. Il non poter pensare con la propria testa e l'inesistenza dell'originalità del singolo rendono Z sempre più insofferente verso la colonia. Per caso incontra e s'innamora della principessa Bala, e per poterla incontrare di nuovo, verrà coinvolto in una terribile guerra contro le ferocissime Termiti rimanendo l'unico sopravvissuto. Divenuto un eroe di guerra, quando si scopre che in realtà è un semplice operaio e non un soldato, Z lascia la colonia rapendo la principessa Bala. Insieme raggiungono Insettopia, luogo mitico, di cui l'esistenza non è certa. Parallelamente il perfido generale Mandibola, promesso sposo di Bala , organizza un vero e proprio colpo di stato cercando di uccidere la regina, madre di Bala, e la maggior parte delle formiche operaie per rifondare egli stesso una nuova colonia.
