Nel giugno 2011 un virus VM2 infetta una donna francese. Nel giro di 28 giorni, l'83% della popolazione europea è colpita, dando l'avvio a una pandemia che si espande fino agli Stati Uniti e al Giappone. Sei mesi dopo, quasi tutta la popolazione americana è stata trasformata in zombie e uno sparuto gruppo di sopravvissuti si ritrova ad attraversare l'intera nazione per raggiungere il rifugio nascosto sull'isola di Catilina.
