Siamo nel 1967, e Larry Gopnik, professore di fisica in una tranquilla università del Mid West, ha appena saputo da sua moglie Judith che lei ha deciso di lasciarlo poiché si è innamorata di Sy Ableman, un uomo a suo avviso molto più concreto e importante dell'inetto Larry. Il fratello disoccupato di Larry, Arthur dorme sul divano di casa loro, il figlio Danny ha seri problemi disciplinari e non combina nulla alla scuola ebraica mentre la figlia Sarah gli ruba costantemente i soldi dal portafogli per potersi rifare il naso. E mentre sua moglie e Sy Ableman progettano allegramente la loro nuova vita insieme, e suo fratello diventa un peso sempre più insostenibile, un anonimo gli scrive lettere minacciose e ostili che mettono a repentaglio la sua cattedra all'Università e uno studente tenta di corromperlo per ottenere la promozione minacciandolo al contempo di denunciarlo per diffamazione...
