Il professor Victor Roth, di origine ebrea, sta festeggiando con i propri familiari il suo sessantesimo compleanno. Improvvisamente la radio annuncia che Hitler è stato nominato cancelliere. È l'inizio della fine: il professore, arrestato, morirà in un campo di concentramento e la figlia, mentre tenta di riparare in Austria, verrà uccisa dall'ex fidanzato, passato nelle file delle Ss.
