Il colonnello di ventura Allen Faulkner viene chiamato dal londinese affarista sir Edward Matherson che, promettendo un forte compenso, lo incarica di liberare Limbani, già presidente di uno Stato africano e ora prigioniero del golpista Zembala. Il Faulkner si attornia di tre fidati collaboratori: il ten. Shawn Fynn, il cap. Rafer Janders, il ten. Pieter Koetzee; quindi arruola una cinquantina di uomini che vengono minuziosamente addestrati da Sandy Young. La spedizione, trasportata nelle vicinanze del campo di prigionia, risolve brillantemente l'impresa della liberazione. Tuttavia, l'aereo inviato per il recupero di Limbani e dei mercenari non atterra perchè sir Edward, che nel frattempo ha combinato lo sfruttamento delle miniere di rame appetite con lo stesso Zembala, ha dato ordine di abbandonare alla reazione dei simba dell'usurpatore sia Faulkner che tutti i suoi.
