Il film è ambientato nel West End di Londra degli anni Cinquanta. I piani per una versione cinematografica di un'opera teatrale di successo subiscono un brusco arresto dopo l'omicidio di un membro fondamentale della troupe. Quando l'ispettore Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) e la zelante recluta Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) prendono in mano il caso, i due si trovano coinvolti in un enigmatico giallo all'interno del sordido e affascinante mondo dietro le quinte del teatro, indagando sul misterioso omicidio a loro rischio e pericolo.
