In un'isola del Pacifico, Kimo è condannato a morte con l'accusa di aver permesso agli americani di effettuare test atomici che stanno diffondendo malattie e di aver eliminato il proprio padre, capo della tribù, per impadronirsi del potere. L'uomo muore scagliando una maledizione contro la moglie che lo ha tradito e contro lo stregone e un rivale che lo hanno spodestato. Il suo corpo viene riposto, a perenne monito, in una cassa posta verticalmente sul suolo. Tempo dopo, un gruppo di scienziati americani giunti sull'isola per valutare le conseguenze delle radiazioni trasportate da un tifone, ascoltano dagli indigeni racconti su una creatura mostruosa, descritta come un tronco vivente, che si aggirerebbe nel villaggio seminando morte e terrore. Tabonga, questo è il nome del mostro, è il prodotto di una spaventosa mutazione che ha rianimato il cadavere di Kimo consentendogli di mettere in atto la sua vendetta.
