Lt. Robert Hearn:
[context: Lt. Hearn, upon returning from battle being severely wounded, and having been brought back to a field hospital because of enlisted men who respected him, retorts to Gen. Cummings in counterpoint to the General's perspective on power:]
I've been thinking a lot about the things you said about the power of fear and the fear of power... I never agreed with your point of view before, but I wasn't sure you were wrong. Now I am sure. Two men carried me 18 miles through the jungle -- a Baptist minister and a wandering Jew. They did it out of love. But they did something else. They saved my life General, they showed me something I've known all my life but I had forgotten. There's a spirit in man that will survive all the reigns of terror and all the hardships. Man cannot achieve the authority of God. And no man whether he's a politician or a general should try. The spirit in man is god-like, eternal, indestructible.
[General walks away with saying a word of contradiction as the movie ends on this note]
