Hal B. Wallis:
[accusingly about the making of Casa Blanca]
How do you think your audience will feel about characters like Victor Laszlo?
Casting Assistant:
What's wrong with Victor?
Hal B. Wallis:
A political refugee .. you saw the newsreel. We can't afford to let our guard down.
Casting Assistant:
Victor Lazlow is real. He has integrity, and he has flaws, just like we all do.
Hal B. Wallis:
Americans don't have flaws, Mr. Wallis. Not it war time. And then there's this French officer who sleeps with a married woman? To escape the war. Renault is a complicated character.
S.Z. Sakall:
Uncomplicate him!
Hal B. Wallis:
French are our allies, Mr. Wallis. Which means this "Renoir", or whatever his name is, needs different choices. Better choices.
Casting Assistant:
The last time I checked, Jack, we weren't in the business of propaganda. This is a movie about hope. About complex people, trying to survive in trying times.
Hal B. Wallis:
This film needs to be the collective embodiment of our nation's character. Much more the vision of just one man.
[sitting down]
Hal B. Wallis:
I'm told you have a personal relationship with Mr. Curtiz...
