I protagonisti della serie televisiva sono una famiglia di mostri che vive in un sinistro maniero come una qualsiasi famiglia americana. I membri di questa bizzarra famiglia sono il padre Herman, una sorta di mostro di Frankenstein che fa sentire la sua forza così come impone l'ordine nella casa; la madre Lily, una specie di vampira ricalcata sul modello della famosa La moglie di Frankenstein; il nonno, un vampiro vestito nella "classica" tenuta resa famosa da Bela Lugosi; il figlio Eddie Wolfgang, lupo mannaro, e la nipote Marilyn, l'unica ragazza "normale" della famiglia in tutti i sensi.
