Due to the homophobic views of Orson Scott Card, who has actively campaigned against LGBT rights for many years, a boycott of the film was organized by various groups in the run up to its release. The studio, Lionsgate, made a press release stating that they do not agree with Card's views, as did star Harrison Ford. However, the controversy, along with mediocre reviews, ensured the film became a box office flop.
