In un futuro prossimo, una razza aliena ostile attacca la Terra, e solo l'eroismo del Comandante della Flotta Internazionale Mazer Rackham evita la disfatta totale. Nell'attesa di un nuovo attacco, lo stimatissimo Colonnello Graff recluta i migliori ragazzi del pianeta per trovare il prossimo Mazer. Ender Wiggin, un ragazzo timido ma brillantissimo, vieve convinto a lasciare la scuola tradizionale per entrare nella Scuola di Guerra di Graff. Lì Ender apprende facilmente e con grande rapidità le tattiche di guerra, vincendo ogni simulazione, guadagnandosi il rispetto degli altri cadetti, e viene presto promosso da Graff alla Scuola di Comando, dove sarà addestrato dallo stesso Mazer.
