The home planets of Megamind and Metro-Man are called Mega-Planet and Metro-Planet respectively (their names appear very briefly, mostly obscured by the word "PANIC", on a giant monitor in the beginning of the movie). This fact led to a fan theory that the city was renamed as Metro-City to honor Metro-Man, rather than Metro-Man naming himself after the city, but the movie establishes that the city had this name before both babies landed on Earth (a "Welcome to Metro City prison" sign can be seen as baby Megamind flies in).
