In the book series, Ender encounters the last Formic queen as a larvae, in which he is the governor of a new colony on a new planet; a number of decades after the war. In communication with the queen telepathically, he learns that when the Formics attacked earth they thought that humans were not a sentient species because they could not communicate telepathically. They thought that the world was free for colonization. In other words, the war (including the two preceding wars - only one of which being referred to in the film) were the result of a mistake. He writes The Hive Queen, an autobiographical-type story from the perspective of the Formics and more specifically, the Queens. They apologize for not realizing that each human was the equivalent of a "queen" in terms of sentience and independent thought. It becomes an instant hit and cult like following, inspiring a new type of religion where the "Speaker for the Dead" gives a more honest and sincere accounting of someone's life, the good and the bad.
