Originally, Sir Richard Attenborough did not want to direct this movie, as he was keen to make Gandhi (1982) after Gli anni dell'avventura (1972). However, major studios were reluctant to finance the movie, so he sought Joseph E. Levine for financing. This movie was part of the agreement in exchange for financing Gandhi (1982).
