Cinematographer Archie Stout and John Ford used infrared black-and-white film stock, which was developed originally for medical and scientific research, in many exterior scenes shot in Monument Valley to enhance the clouds and rock formations. It doesn't sense the color blue, recording it instead as black, making for dramatic landscapes and skies. Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, who worked with Ford on La croce di fuoco (1947), suggested this technique.
