Un generale retrocesso al grado di colonnello e mandato al comando di Fort Apache, cerca ad ogni costo di rivalutarsi sfidando un capo pellerossa, che comunque ha la meglio su di lui. Un giovane, tra i pochi superstiti, sposa la figlia dell'ostinato colonnello, che ci ha rimesso la pelle. Una delle moltissime rivisitazioni della storia di Custer (anche se qui il protagonista si chiama Thursday). È considerato uno dei capolavori western di Ford, superato forse soltanto da Ombre rosse e da Sfida infernale. Henry Fonda fa il colonnello e toglie quasi tutto lo spazio a Wayne, relegato in una parte quasi da caratterista. Ruolo determinante ha invece la famosa "Valle dei monumenti".
