During Captain York's search for Cochise, the Apaches kept track of his progress via mirrors (semaphores). The Apaches did not have a written language so this would not have been possible. In fact years later, when Geronimo witnessed a mirrored semaphore in use by the US Army it caused him to surrender for the last time.A written language is not necessary to interpret mirror flashes (heliograph). They wouldn't be using Morse Code.
