The battle scenes featuring artillery show multiple instances of artillery rounds exploding when they hit the ground, a wagon, or a tree, etc. Artillery of that era fired only one type of exploding round, shrapnel, an anti-personnel round which exploded in midair to spread jagged bits of metal. The rounds fired for long-range bombardment were solid cast iron or steel balls which were not themselves explosive.
