Dal 1° al 3 luglio 1863 a Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) si svolse la più grande e sanguinosa battaglia (cinquantamila morti) della guerra civile. Le truppe sudiste del generale Robert E. Lee furono sconfitte da quelle nordiste al comando del generale George G. Meade. Scritto dal regista e basato sul romanzo The Killer Angels di Michael Shaara, prodotto dalla società televisiva di Ted Turner, fu messo in onda nei Paesi anglofoni in 3 puntate; esiste una versione per l'homevideo che dura quasi 6 ore. Piuttosto accurato, dal punto di vista storico-militare, nella descrizione della battaglia, ne rimuove sistematicamente la crudeltà e l'orrore: le morti sono tutte gloriose, pulite, istantanee, così come sono tutti valorosi, nobili e in buona fede sia gli unionisti sia i confederati.
