When Lee is rejecting Longstreet's suggestion to leave Gettysburg and maneuver around the Union Army, he states that he has never abandoned a battlefield to the enemy. In actuality, he did just that ten months earlier at Antietam, when he withdrew his battered army out of Maryland and back into Virginia, leaving the Union army in possession of the battlefield.
