Buford's defense on the first day is shown to be at a dilapidated stone wall until the infantry reinforcements of 1st Corps arrives, seemingly holding since sunup. Buford's defense was a defense-in-depth. His troopers advanced as far west of town as possible until contact was made and gradually fell back towards McPherson's Ridge, fighting along the way, including a stand at a cemetery.
