Whilst signing the letter during his opening conversation with Custer, General Sheridan identifies himself as the Commanding General of the Army of the Potomac. Sheridan never commanded the Army of the Potomac, and was the Commanding General of the Army of the Shenandoah at the end of the Civil War. (George G. Meade was the Commanding General of the Army of the Potomac for the last two years of the Civil War until its deactivation.)
