Nel 1942 il capitano Hamson, mentre è incominciato l'assedio di Tobruk, inizia, a bordo di un'autolettiga, il lungo viaggio verso Alessandria: sono con lui un fedele sergente, un capitano sudafricano e due ausiliarie. La comitiva deve superare gravi difficoltà e pericoli, tra i quali un campo minato e due incontri con carri armati germanici. Una delle ragazze muore durante uno scontro con un'autoblinda tedesca. Il sudafricano è riconosciuto, dai suoi compagni di avventura, per quella spia tedesca che veramente è, e questa circostanza rende ancora più tesa l'atmosfera nel piccolo ambiente. L'arrivo ad Alessandria si compie felicemente, anche perché gli ospiti dell'autolettiga, inizialmente ostili al sudafricano che li ripaga di egual moneta, hanno imparato a comprendere ed a rispettare l'avversario. Più di una volta il capitano Hamson e il tedesco si sono reciprocamente salvati la vita. Un brindisi a base di birra ghiacciata, sanzionerà una amicizia nata tra gli orrori della guerra.
