Il piccolo Jacob McCandles viene rapito da una banda di fuorilegge che hanno assalito la fattoria della sua famiglia e chiedono un riscatto milionario. Marta, la nonna, decide di rivolgersi al marito Jake, dal quale vive separata da 15 anni; questi è ancora un tipo vigoroso, a dispetto dell'età. Fingendo di accettare le richieste dei banditi, giunge al loro covo accompagnato da due figli e da un vecchio indiano; nel baule non ci sono soldi ma carta straccia.
