Dopo quasi cinquant'anni di matrimonio, la contessa Sofya, devota moglie di Lev Tolstoj, scopre improvvisamente che tutto il suo mondo va gambe all'aria. In nome della sua nuova religione utopica e delle sue idee anarco-cristiane, il grande romanziere russo ha rinunciato al titolo nobiliare e alle sue proprietà per diventare povero, vegetariano e celibe; potrebbe inoltre essere stato convinto da Chertkov, il suo discepolo, a lasciare i diritti dei suoi ironici racconti al popolo russo anziché alla famiglia. Con ogni stratagemma, la donna lotta ferocemente contro la comunità libertaria che si è installata in casa sua per quel che ritiene le appartenga. Allontanata da Tolstoj riuscirà a rivederlo solo in punto di morte, nell'ultima stazione.
