Nel profondo Sud afoso degli Stati Uniti, arriva Ben Quick, un piantagrane, vagabondo e faccia da schiaffi con la fama di piromane. Va a lavorare per Willy Varner, proprietario terriero che domina tutti con pugno di ferro, dai familiari al paese e ha una relazione con Minnie. Willy intuisce che il nuovo arrivato ha una grande personalità e di trovarsi di fronte a un suo pari.
