Da un romanzo di Barry Gifford. Sailor, in libertà vigilata, e Lula, scappata di casa, si amano follemente e tentano di raggiungere il Texas. Thriller d'inseguimento che ha cadenze di film nero, modi di un film di strada ed eccessi di violenza da melodramma gotico. Lynch connota la sua storia maledetta del profondo Sud con una dimensione ironica e parodistica che ne rovescia il senso e ne rivela la vera natura di favola comica, nel significato “basso” della parola, ma anche vicino al fumetto, quella di due innamorati che attraversano un mondo atroce dal cuore selvaggio. Anche quando apparentemente s'accomoda alle leggi di un genere, Lynch rimane un visionario impressionista e grottesco che guarda all'America di oggi con occhio impietoso. Palma d'oro a Cannes.
