New York, 1987: Patrick Bateman è uno yuppie ricco che lavora nell'ambiente di Wall Street come dirigente di una società finanziaria che si occupa di fusioni e acquisizioni. Nella vita privata Patrick è una persona meticolosa, che dedica molto tempo alla cura della propria persona per acquisire il riconoscimento sociale che nella società yuppie è strettamente associato all'apparenza ed al consumismo. Di giorno vive una vita basata su pranzi di lavoro, locali alla moda e riunioni tra amici, in tipica rappresentanza della classe sociale cui egli appartiene, ma che nello stesso tempo lo rende indistinguibile dalle altre persone della sua cerchia. La sua frustrazione esplode di notte, facendo emergere nel protagonista l'assoluto disprezzo degli emarginati, l'invidia nei confronti dei colleghi, e l'aridità affettiva verso le donne, fino a trasformarlo in un serial killer che conserva i corpi, o loro parti, in casa.
