Bubber Reeves, evaso con un complice, resta solo e, nel tentativo di raggiungere il Messico, arriva dalle parti del suo paese d'origine. Qui sua moglie è divenuta l'amante di Jake, figlio dell'uomo più ricco del luogo. La sua presenza scatena i peggiori soggetti mettendoli sulle sue tracce. Solo lo sceriffo Calder cerca di mantenere l'uso della ragione, ma il suo intervento è inutile.
