Cedric Errol è un bambino di sette anni, orfano di padre che vive negli Stati Uniti assieme alla madre. Suo padre era il figlio del Conte di Dorincourt, un ricco nobile inglese, che aveva interrotto ogni rapporto con il figlio, dopo che questi aveva sposato una donna americana e non nobile. Cedric è all'oscuro di tutto, vive tranquillamente la sua infanzia, fino a quando suo zio Bevis, il fratello maggiore del padre, muore. Cedric diventa l'erede universale di tutti i beni della famiglia, ottenendo il titolo di Lord Fauntleroy.Cedric si vede costretto a lasciare New York per trasferirsi in Inghilterra, andando a vivere con il burbero e misantropo nonno. Il Conte di Dorincourt è costretto, suo malgrado, ad incontrare il nipote e l'odiata nuora, solamente allo scopo di dare a Cedric un'educazione adeguata ad un lord inglese, destinato a diventare il suo successore.
