Una palla di fuoco precipita, di notte, nei boschi vicino alla cittadina di Arborville. Un vagabondo la trova e la smuove, ma finisce con la mano inglobata in una sostanza gelatinosa. Spaventato, corre sulla strada e viene investito dall’auto di Paul (Donovan Leitch) e Meg (Shawnee Smith), che lo portano in ospedale. Ma la sostanza aliena ingloba il corpo del vagabondo e, aumentata di volume, incorpora anche Paul ed esce dall’ospedale, alla ricerca di nuove vittime. La colpa della scomparsa di Paul viene attribuita a Brian (Kevin Dillon), un teppistello locale. Costretto a nascondersi, Brian si imbatte nel blob e, per proteggersi, si rifugia all’interno di un grande frigorifero con Meg, scoprendo che il freddo è un’ottima difesa contro la sostanza fagocitante, sempre più grande e minacciosa.
