Nel 1973, Frank Carlton Feranna Jr. si allontana dalla madre ubriaca dopo anni di patrigni abusanti e si sposta da Seattle a Los Angeles nel 1978. Dopo un fallito tentativo di connettersi con il padre biologico, Frank cambia legalmente il suo nome in Nikki Sixx nel 1980. Un anno dopo, dopo aver litigato con i membri della propria band i London al Whisky a Go Go, Nikki fa amicizia con il batterista Tommy Lee e gli rivela che sta formando una nuova band. Si unisce alla band anche il chitarrista Mick Mars, che soffre di spondilite anchilosante. Il trio quindi recluta il cantante principale Vince Neil dalla cover band Rock Candy, e dopo un po' di brainstorming, il quartetto si decide di chiamare Mötley Crüe.
