Un avvocato, Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) riesce a difendere i suoi clienti grazie alle bugie. Ma quelle che erano le sue necessità per il lavoro, si rivelano un grave problema in famiglia. Infatti la moglie, Audrey Reede (Maura Tierney) ha divorziato da più di sette mesi coabitando con il suo nuovo fidanzato Jerry (Cary Elwes).
